A devastating incident occurred on Friday night in the West Ridge neighborhood of Chicago, claiming the life of a young Amundsen High School student. Sixteen-year-old Benicio Gomez was tragically shot and killed near the intersection of North Rockwell Street and West Hollywood Avenue.
The shooting, which took place around 7 p.m., also injured two other teenagers. According to the Chicago Police Department (CPD), the gunfire erupted as Gomez and the two other teens were entering a vehicle. Gomez was struck in the back and was immediately rushed to St. Francis Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
The other two teenagers involved in the incident sustained varying degrees of injuries. One is reported to be in fair condition, while the other remains in critical condition at local hospitals. Benicio was a valued member of our school community and will be deeply missed by everyone who knew him. In times like these, it is important to come together and support each other. We know that this news may be very difficult for many of you, and we want you to know that we are here for you. Counselors will be at the school on Monday, June 24 from 9:00 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. if you need someone to talk to or if you need support in any way.
Please take care of yourselves and look out for one another. If you see a friend or classmate who seems to be having a hard time, please encourage them to speak with a counselor or a trusted adult. We are all in this together, and it’s important to lean on each other for support.
